What's New

We know the the brains of babies develop fast during the first years of life.  You can help that brain development by reading books with your small child.

We’ve teamed up with the Yellowknife Public Library to encourage all NWT families to read 1000 Books Before Kindergarten.  If you post photos of you and your child reaching 100-book milestones on Facebook, you’ll be automatically entered into draws with prizes awarded twice each year.

This training is for community leaders who want to run an enjoyable youth project that embeds literacy and essential skills.  Projects should give students confidence and technical skills as well as some academic learning.  Past projects included opportunities to learn to repair bicycles or create traditional products such as mittens, drums, packsacks and dry meat.

National Family Literacy Day is a national awareness initiative, held annually on January 27th. This special day promotes families reading and doing other literacy-related activities together.  Take 15 minutes a day to learn with your family!

The NWT Literacy Council encourages communities, schools, families and organizations to celebrate family literacy day in their own unique way. Many communities or schools celebrate the whole week by hosting several family literacy events.
