Indigenous Languages Month 2023

Indigenous Languages Month

February is Indigenous Languages Month in the Northwest Territories. It’s a time to celebrate the NWT’s Indigenous languages and encourage people to learn about and use them.

In the NWT we are very fortunate – we live in a land rich in languages and cultures. We have 11 official languages – nine of those are Indigenous, and the other two are French and English. For Indigenous languages to survive and thrive, it’s important to promote their daily use – at home, in the community and at work.  This year's ILM theme is "I'm in." We hope that people from all walks of life and all cultures will count themselves in to learn, speak, live, and share Indigenous Language learning this month and year-round.

To celebrate Indigenous Languages Month, the Literacy Council will be hosting a Bingo contest in which players check off a variety of language challenges from a game card. We will also be featuring guest authors in our blog post, sharing resources created by ECE, and inviting you to participate in a variety of contests, giveaways, fun activities and more.

Stay tuned for more ILM fun and information.
