You can see people’s imagination run wild with their own creations amidst the construction paper, markers, blunt scissors, glue sticks, and googley eyes.
This is what makes family literacy activities so much fun. Working in the field of family literacy is like celebrating National Child Day every day.
Most of our work supports families and programs to carry out such activities in NWT communities. We create family and community resources that they can use. We also organize training, such as the Family Literacy Training Institute coming up during the first week of December.
I enjoyed the chance recently to do hands-on activities during the new Family Nights on Campus with Aurora College students and their families in Yellowknife.This year the NWT Literacy Council joined up with Aurora College to put on these special evening activities.
One night we made a healthy snack, a parfait, using our Little Chefs program resource. The kids really enjoyed the snack. In October we did Halloween themed crafts, using Pumpkin Pie Play Dough. We had games and books for prizes. Families were very happy to receive a free book.
Last night Santa visited the college. We also played Christmas bingo with prizes, and made a sock snowman and a pipe cleaner candy cane.
Spending time doing fun things with your children and grandchildren is the best gift. Make that your gift for the children in your life on National Child Day November 20 and every day.
