It’s becoming a tradition for the NWT Literacy Council folks to share their Christmas book giving ideas. Here’s what we are giving for gifts this year.
Home is Burning - A Memoir, by Dan Marshall
This year I will give my brother Home is Burning - A Memoir, by Dan Marshall. The book is filled with humour, plenty of profanity, self-deprecation and extreme sorrow. Dan tells the story of moving home to Salt Lake City to care for his dying parents. His brutally honest telling of his family’s story never shies away from the tragic, filthy, and uncomfortable reality of what life becomes when your mother has terminal cancer, and your father is diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, sometimes called Lou Gehrig's disease). It makes this memoir a must read.

Motorcycles and Sweetgrass, by Drew Hayden Taylor
I'd recommend Drew Hayden Taylor's Motorcycles and Sweetgrass for the adult or young adult reader on your Christmas list. Funny and insightful, Motorcycles and Sweetgrass is the story of Otter Lake, a sleepy Anishnawbe community, stirred up by the arrival of a mysterious stranger on a motorcycle. Something to bring a little light into this season of darkness!

A Ptarmigan in a Birch Tree, by Amber Henry
This Christmas I am giving A Ptarmigan in a Birch Tree, by Amber Henry, to my daughter, nieces and nephews. It is a fun and beautiful book about Christmas in Yellowknife.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Part 1 and 2, by Jack Thorne
I am buying Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Part 1 and 2, by Jack Thorne, as a Christmas present for my kids because they love the Harry Potter series. Both children and adults will enjoy this play script.
