Is there a bookworm in your life that makes your heart skip a beat? Skip the roses this year and say “I love you” with a book! While Valentine’s Day may be just around the corner, it’s not the only holiday we’ll be celebrating here at the NWT Literacy Council.
February 14 also marks International Book Giving Day.
We celebrate by delivering books to Yellowknife community groups to use in their programs or to give away to clients. Last year we visited the YWCA, Centre for Northern Families, and the Aboriginal Head Start program in Ndılǫ. We also send books to other communities in the NWT. If you want free books to share on International Book Giving Day, email us at nwtliteracy@nwtliteracy.ca.
This year we’ll be celebrating at Health and Wellness Fairs in Katl’odeeche and Délı̨ne. Please stop by, say hello, and pick up one of our free books for all ages while quantities last!
Here are a few other ways to celebrate this special day:
Give a book to a friend or family member
Do you have a new favourite book or a tried and true classic you’d like to share? Celebrate International Book Giving Day by giving someone special a new or used book.
Donate a book
Donate books to your local library, community organization, or shelter. Many families don’t have access to books of their own, so even if you can only donate one, every little bit counts!
Host a community event
Does your community host a regular Family Literacy program? Have a special session to celebrate International Book Giving Day. Have participants bring books from home and have a book swap, give books to each family that attends, or come up with your own creative ideas for celebrating books and reading.
How will you celebrate International Book Giving Day? Share your ideas and photos on social media using the hashtags #bookgivingday and #bookgivingNWT. We look forward to hearing from you!
