Resolve to Read More

Do you want to read more during 2017? Reading is relaxing, informative and usually a better use of your time than binge-watching Netflix or checking social media.

Many people make it a New Year’s resolution to read more books. It’s such a popular goal, there’s an app for that. In fact, there are several apps! Apps like Bookout, and Bookling can keep you motivated by tracking your progress and reminding you to read.  They are like fitness trackers for your mind.

Maybe you need ideas for what to read. You can Google book lists or search for the lists posted on various media sites, such as the Globe and Mail and Maclean’s.  GoodReads is a popular website. It has lots of book lists for different book categories and for different age groups. Your reading habits can influence those around you, including your children. Don’t forget our own suggestions of 100 books for newborns and preschoolers, Snuggle Up Together.

Book clubs are a good motivation to read, get ideas for good books and gain a deeper understanding or different perspectives on a book. Start one with your friends or visit OnlineBookClub.org or the Amnesty International Book Club.

Reading can be cheaper than a Netflix subscription if you have friends to exchange books with or use NWT Public Library Services. Living in a small community is no barrier to reading good books. Even if you don’t have a community library, you can borrow books, ebooks and audiobooks by mail for free. NWT Public Libraries even sends you a free shipping label to mail back your items.

There are so many books and so little time. Start now to read more.  Reading makes you a better person.
