This week’s guest blog comes from Christine Abela, the adult educator in Fort Liard.
It is International Adult Learners’ Week April 11 to 19!
Let’s take a few moments to appreciate adults who make improving literacy a priority in their lives. As an adult educator, I am lucky to be a part of the lifelong learning process for many people.
First, I have to say how much I admire the courage of adult learners for stepping up to the challenge. Everything from running a house and taking care of kids to personal issues and past bad educational experiences can be monumental obstacles for learners to overcome. Coming in to sign up can be a huge step.
Second, I appreciate what each person has to offer. What an amazing range of stories adult learners bring to the table. I truly value the wealth of knowledge and life experiences that come into the classroom.
How do adult learners feel about going to school? Here are some of the responses I’ve heard from adult learners:
“Coming to school gives me something positive to do for myself.”
“I want to set an example for my kids.”
“I like the fun events, like reading with the grade one class and volunteering to deliver turkeys” through the Healthy Families program.
“The best part is learning how to use a computer.”
In the classroom, quite often, I feel like the learner. Thank you to all the adult learners who attend classes for constantly opening my eyes to new perspectives and enriching my life.
