Charlotte Upton Senior Project Specialist- Youth Literacy Charlotte was born in Yellowknife (Somba K’e), has lived here for 24 years and is proud to call the NWT her home. Charlotte graduated from Trent University in 2014 with a Bachelor of General Arts and started at the NWT Literacy Council shortly after in 2015. She has worked on many projects and programs areas in the last 10 years but currently works in the role of Senior Project Specialist. Charlotte has traveled throughout the NWT through her work with NWTLC with a focus on supporting community lead and community driven programming. In her free time Charlotte enjoys being with her family and spending time outdoors, especially camping and on whitewater canoe adventures throughout the NWT. She has completed a BAH from Queen's University in theatre and film as well as a Master's of Arts in Performance from Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London, England. She is the Artistic Director of Tin Can Collective in Yellowknife, and show cases her paintings at Gallery on 47th street. She has years of experience working with youth and community programming in culturally aware spaces. She is passionate about connecting people, telling human stories and learning through creativity. In her free time Sophie enjoys canoe tripping and being outside especially by or on a lake, playing music and reading about archeology. Jordyn Riou Project Specialist - Family Literacy Jordyn Riou has spent most of her life in the north, since moving to Yellowknife as a child. She has a BA in Child and Youth Study from Mount Saint Vincent University, and has worked for several community non-profit organizations as an early childhood educator and youth program facilitator. She is passionate about children and youth's perspectives being made visible to the community, especially as a response to systemic inequities.Jordyn is a contemporary dance artist and a board director for the Yellowknife Dance Collective. She loves learning new skills and hobbies that allow her to make art, move her body, play outside, or some combination of all three!Jordyn currently works with the Family Literacy team. Her favourite part about working at the NWT Literacy Council is organizing trainings where facilitators across the NWT gather to learn and share stories. Michelle Chui Project Specialist- Empowering Northern Youth Michelle is a program specialist with the Empowering Northern Youth program at the NWT Literacy Council. She has lived in the North for seven years, including five years in Yellowknife (Somba K’é). Michelle brings a background in speech-language pathology, financial education, and community programming, with a focus on supporting youth in work readiness and life skills development. Outside of her professional work, she is a multidisciplinary artist and enjoys fishing and kicksledding with her huskies.
